HowTo: Removing the Stock grips
« on: April 26, 2006, 08:09:12 PM »

Removing the Stock Grips.

Oh yes, removing the stock grips. A totally fun task.

I will try to do this from memory.

Remove the stock end caps.
The stock grip throttle side should slide right off. This one is easy.
The left grip is glued on.
For the left one, once the end cap is removed, Get some WD40. And using
the little plastic straw on the can, squirt some up under the stock
grip to help dissolve the glue. Let this soak for aout 1/2 hour.
Then get a thin flat head screw driver and insert under the stock grip
and run it completely around the handlebar to unseal the grip from the
bar.

When this is off there will be glue left on the bar. Use WD-40 or other
to get the glue off.
Next you want to have the bar clean. I used a light SOS pad to etch the
end of the bar so the new glue would have something to adhere. This
glue should have come with your new ISO grips. Make sure the wd-40 is
completely cleaned off. Use alocohol pads to get that bar cleaned.
Otherwise the glue and new grip will not stick..

When you apply the new glue. Put the grip on right away since the glue
sets up real quick.

Now when you install the new locking end caps, the bolts used to secure
the end caps may touch the handlebar on the throttle grip side causing
the throttle grip to not close naturally. If this happens, file down
those screws by a few threads and you should be good to go.

That should do it.

Have fun.

If the ISO grips you are referring to are the same as the Kuryakyn grips I put on my Harley, I used plain ole super glue. There are also several types of glue removers and solvents available at paint and body shop supply stores that make it easy to remove the original residue. The Harley shop installed the new grips on my bike with the traditional glue and(as usual) within a few weeks the clutch side came loose. That is quite an unsettling experience to be tooling down the highway going way too fast and the clutch side grip comes off in your hands. It does tend to leave pucker marks on the seat leather. I heard that super glue worked better for those particular grips so I tried it and I've never had another problem. It can get messy if you aren't careful but otherwise worth a try.

Mine did on the throttle side. the left or clutch side ended up breaking the stub off inside the bar. I'm not sure about the super glue, the bottle said it it was gel maybe it's just thicker than regular super glue.

WD 40 is the best at removing the grips as if you spill any on your paint it won't hurt it.
anything else is just not wise to use as it could possible damage your paint.

yep, let the WD-40 have time to dissolve the glue holding the left handlebar grip on. Then using a flat head screw driver, work it in under the grip and go around the handlebar to break the glue to grip contact. voila, it will slide off. You will then have to remove the residual glue left on the bar. Once this is done, you should clean the bar good, then etch the bar with a brillo pad so that the glue for the new grip will have something to grab onto.

hello all,

a couple guys in here have used the stock grip endcaps to make a housing for their bike's key.  can anyone tell me how they did that?  unless I missed it, it's not on the site anywhere. I'm guessing they cut down the head and mounted it in the grip cap cup with epoxy or something?

ride safe,

What ever you do before you start this cover your tank.

I put the right grip on first so that I could determine where the rubber pieces would come to a rest, then mounted the left grip and rotated to match the right positioning. Make sense?

I took a flat blade screwdriver about 3/8 wide and gently tapped it down between the cap annd grip then drove the cap away from the grip.

I took a 6" long 3/16" diameter flat blade screwdriver and drove it up under the left grip then rocked the screwdriver left and right and the grip came off. Then used denatured alcohol to clean the bar off.

Not to send you to another site but there are a  few pictures on   thevog.net  in the gallery. Search "changing grips 08 KP"

At one time I was going to put ISO grips on my 07 KP, but as I was walking through Wally World(Wal-Mart) and was looking at softball bats, and said to myself, "self" I bet baseball bat rap would work to give me more cushen on my KP, and it did and only $3.00 a grip. they are great. if you don't like it your only down 3 bucks a handle.

I used Gorilla Glue to keep the key in the stock handlebar endcap.  I had to grind the key down to fit.  Looks good when you have the key in the ignition.
