JP - Front Tire change/enlargement
« on: January 04, 2008, 10:08:18 AM »
Hey all,

The wife and I have a smaller bike that she is taking over.  Thus, I'm in the market for an upgrade and am interested in the Vic JP but truly am not liking the small front tire. I've got conflicting comments from local Vic reps as to what it would cost to upgrade.  Also, since I'm not really into the Hammer, I'd like to mod the JP.

I found a JP locally that has upgraded front end and put on a 120 tire as compared to the stock 90. See here: http://houston.craigslist.org/mcy/525153713.html

Can anyone at all please advise if they've done this or what it would truly take to accomplish with guidance on where to get parts?? I plan on buying very soon...but want to figure this out before doing so - call this my research before buying!  Figured current JP riders would be the best option to really help me out as the owner of the JP for sale on craig's list is only given me basic info.

Any and all comments / suggestions most welcome.

Thanks so very much !!

I did it to my Vegas (Same front end).
You'll need new wheels (unless you dont mind a missmatched front and back) and fender.
I used extreme machine polished wheels (Chopey) with matching rotors and pulley for approx $2000
Ness makes a matching wide fender, with the ridge, that cost me around $375 painted (local shop painted)

Jazz - so you didn't have to change anything mechanically to the front end such as the forks?  The tire and fender fit within stock materials?

I have no problem with buying new fender and rims assuming that is all that is necessary.  Is that fender similar to what's on the hammer as it appears to be shorter (re not covering as much of the tire) as compared to stock JP fender?

Thanks for the input.  FYI... on Vip rep said it could be done for around $2k ... the other said I'd have to replace the entire front end to match the hammer thus having well over $7k into the swap.

I put the 120 up front and a 280 in the rear ...
All you'll need for the front is the wheel and a fender
I had my fender handmade and it is now available from Scott @ Conquest customs outta Florida.

Ride was better with the 120 up front and now with the 280 on the rear it is faster in the turns or with the flip/flops in the twisties
Have a great day!

Wow... nice ride Hot!    :o

Thanks for the advise guys... this really helps out and lets me know what to expect.  I guess I'm surprised the rear 280 is better - figured it would increase the difficulty in turning.

I guess the last question I have is how does the wider rear tires wear as compared to those on standard vegas or KP?  What's the mileage rating on these and what's the replacement cost for each (250 vs 280)?

This helpful thread is truly making me want to get to the dealer and get my bike and start modifying asap!  LOL   :D

Like father said, just the wheel and fender.   BTW, the Ness fender is fiberglass and will seem like you'll need spacers to fit with the forks.  It may seem a little crooked too.  Once you get all the bolts in and tightened down it's fine.

Check out http://www.bikersimage.com/ for best prices on Xtreme Machine wheels.   You will have to buy matching  pulley and rotors.  Stock won't fit.

Good Luck,
Dave

Outside of my previous question about mileage rating & replacement cost on the tires (particularly 250 vs 280), can any explain how the larger tires being added on front & back affect speedometer?  Can this be adjusted and if so, does it need to be done by the dealer?

Thanks to all,

I dont think it would effect your speedo at all unless there was a major difference in profile.

Certanly doesn't from the wider front.  I wouldn't know about the back.   I doubt it could be adjusted if there was a difference.   Check to see if the speed sensor and speedo are same part number for Vegas, KP, and JP.  If same, definitely no difference.
