Arlen Ness Big Shot produces Rich running bike?
« on: January 14, 2008, 10:37:49 AM »
Greetings all! Happy New Year!
I have a very low milage 03 Vegas, Vance & Hines with Thunder Monster baffles, K&N filter & vented airbox cover and Arlen Ness Big Shot fuel controller. I inherited all the accessories with the machine, installed them and have been trying to get the machine to run properly. She runs very strong through all gears and power settings but the pipes are showing excess black soot...RICH! I have set the Big Shot to the leanest settings and still to rich. I removed the Big Shot from the system (removed ground wire) and she still runs rich. HELP!
Brent

Do you have Stage 1 download or stock?

These Fuel Controllers usually require Stock downloads, since you cannot remove fuel, only add fuel.

AFAIK, the only one that will remove fuel is the Power Commander.

I am a newbee >:( to fuel injection so please be patient.
As far as I know it is all sock. At least it was till I got my hands on it.  Had a less than 300  miles on it when I picked her up in Noember 07 (no kidding). Basically brand new. Seemed to run okay with stock setup. At 900 miles, I couldn't stand the way she talked so I Installed V&H Stage 1 pipes, I think stage 1 (purchased used from MBW Products) with thunder monster baffles installed by MBWwith the K&N filter and cut out cover. Ran noticably stronger but richer than hell.  Someone said the TPS needs adjusting. How could the throttle position have anything to do with running that rich????? I am thinking TPS or Oil Temp sender??????
That is good to know you cannot take fuel away with the Big Shot...makes sense now that you pointed out the obvious.
After much agonizing thoght, I am taking her in Friday to a Local dealer whom I know nothing about. Makes me very nervous. I have yet to meet a tecnichan who does what I want him/her to do. IF they would allow me in the back to watch,  learn and  talk me through it (even if they do charge more), I would be WAY WAY WAY happie ;D ;D ;D ;Dr. For over 30 years I have tuned my own carburated bikes with great results so I think I know a little bit about the concept...and not much about fuel injection. Her I GOOOOOOOOO!

If you have the controller all the way down and it's not lean as hell and bucking/surging... there is definitely a stage 1 download in it or someone richened up the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). On a Vic the TPS is sort of the starting point for the fuel curve.

Victorys like to run on the rich side. Soot in the pipes is unavoidable. How do the plugs look?

After playing around with this set up for over 500 milles, my bike runs best WITHOUT the Big Shot and  unmodified STOCK ECM Flash....go figure! I thought it should have run lean. I was getting a bit of black soot in the pipes (not as bad as I first thought). I took the Vegas to a Victory Dealer (I normally never do that). GREAT guys at Diablo Motorsports, Fowler, California. Jim and Jake stated my machines TPS was set correctly and all is well. They liked the way she ran as the bike runs strong....no problems so I ride the hell out of it.  41 MPG! I love this machine!
Thanks for your input. This is a great forum!
