New 04 Vegas... Idle and dying problems
« on: June 15, 2007, 09:26:55 AM »
Have 1600 miles on the bike, been in the dealers shop 3 times for the problem, still not fixed.

It'll die after you've been crusin at 70 mph and let off the gas, and it'll die when you've been riding at low speeds and let off the gas.. At first the idle was set low, 800 rpm, so they brought it up to 1000 rpm and told me they remapped it.. Problem was still there, just idled faster, just about dumped it on a turn coming off I-70 when it died and I restarted at 60 mph causing the rear to come around... Took it back in, they put the idle back down to 800 rpm and again said they remapped it... Sounds like it has a full race cam in it and won't idle at all.. I'm also getting 35 miles to the gallon... Any ideas????

That sounds similar to the problems my brother was having with his 04 Kingpin. He was going back to the dealer quite abit. Eventually they ended up getting it fixed with a S&S map downlad and some tuning. Now his bike runs like a bat out of hell. He has the stage 1 though so I am not sure if thats your cure.

1. Idle is set too low.
2. Stalling? Have them check the TPS adjustment
3. 35 mpg? Maybe too rich.

No mods, stock pipes... Took it back to the dealer again, said they checked everything out... including the TPS... Idle was at 1K when I left the shop... within 2 hours it was back down to 800 rpm.. Sounds like a TPS problem to me... Guess I just don't understand the new bike warranty thing, do they lose $$$ when they work on a bike that's covered? Or do they just not want to loose customers??

I don't think it's your TPS, just doesn't sound right........
Also there is a phillips head screw under your tank just to the right of the cheese wedge where the
key is to adjust your idle. You may need to turn it up just a little. Some say this will affect your TPS
and if that's true it was shown to me by my dealers tech and I have done it to many other Vic's and there hasn't been any issue with doing it!

I brought up the TPS because when I bought my bike I started having similar (not exactly the same) issues. Dealer tried a remap. Also had the issues with idle speed being too low, or if set right changing back to low after riding for a while. Dealer finally adjusted the TPS and haven't had the problem since.
Any day riding is a good day!

Honestly, it doesn't sound like your dealer's service dept is actually doing the TPS calibration correctly, if at all.  Make sure they hook the bike up to the Digital Wrench software, AND to a wideband / Lambda gas analyzer, otherwise, they aren't doing a calibration, probably just a TPS sweep/reset, which does you no favors.  This must be done with the idle set around 1000rpm and after the bike is fully warmed beyond the 8 min fuel enrichment cycle.  Also, if I were you, I'd have them (or do it yourself) clean your throttle bodies!  It's easy, and even though most have a few more miles on their bikes before beginning this regular maintenance procedure, you'd be surprised how much it can effect your idle and low speed driveability, especially if the bikes been running rich and/or belching all along.... definitely would makes those TB's prematurely dirty, exacerbating the problem further....
Also, make sure they put the proper EFI map on that thing too!

Thanks all, I'll give everything a shot... I've been wondering if they've done anything to it besides adjust the idle... Don't know if any of you have seen any of the 04 Victory Riders bikes in your local shops, but my Vegas is one of them... Picked it up at a great price this April, great price unless the problems get worse anyway... Came with a "New" title and had 560 miles on it.. I should probably post this to a different forum section, but thought I'd ask if anyone else might have picked one of these up?
