Build your own chopper
« on: October 28, 2005, 11:11:08 PM »

Has anyone ever built a chopper from one of these kits like Big Bear Choppers http://www.bigbearchoppers.com/ offers?

It really seems like it would be a good start at learning how to build a bike, minus the fabrication work. Not cheap but may be a good hobby for the winter.

No, but I have seen a special on their kits on one of the TV cycle shows. They toured the plant and showed how the kits are done. Very professional. All the major components are assembled at factory to make sure everything fits before shipping. It seems that Big Bear Choppers have got it down to a science on making a detailed workable kit bike.

I'm starting a build, but it's not a kit bike. I'm doing one basically from scratch, mind you I don't mean like building my own frame or engine. I have been buying components over the last 3 years as I could afford them and this winter I hope to start the build.
I'll post some pics of some of the components soon  Wink

Now that sounds like a project. My local chopper shop sells rolling chassis. That would be a good start. My only problem is that I have no welding experience. I may have to take a class. I feel confident about the mechanical and wiring skills. Once I get this knowledge I would love to try a build. Something small so I can screw it up to learn.

Definitely keep us posted on your progress. If you want your own Chopper build board, let me know and I will create it for you to post your progress.

That would be cool Jim, I mean if you guys are really interested in seeing how this build is gonna go.

I had planned on keeping my own digital diary of sorts anyway during this build, for posterity ya know  Cheesy

So if you wanna go ahead and set it up I'll have some pics to post in a day or so.

Mind you, I just got all my stuff moved out of my basement to the new garage very recently (can't do any welding in the basement, major fire hazards down there  Shocked) and I still don't have any lighting or heat yet, the heater is on order right now and I just need to get the shop lights hung and wired and the heater wired up when it gets here, otherwise I think I'm all set.

I created a "Chopper Build" board. So feel free to add what you want here. I'll add you as a Moderator to this board so you can do your own edits.

For images, go ahead and make a new album under your account. Then you can refer to the pics from the "Chopper Build" board.  If you need more space, let me know.

Let me know if you need anything else.
